Election 2024: Republican Slater battles incumbent May for Syracuse’s NY Senate district

Syracuse, N.Y. — A pair of Syracuse residents, incumbent state Sen. Rachel May and challenger Caleb Slater, are competing in the 2024 election to represent a district that includes the entire city.
Democrat May, 67, is seeking her fourth two-year term in Albany representing Central New York, while Slater, 28, is making his first run for public office. Slater defeated Fanny Villarreal in a bitterly fought Republican primary in June that centered largely over which candidate was more conservative. May has also secured the Working Families Party ballot line.
